  3. of sandstone, built in the Italian
  4. renaissance style 1792-99 to the designs of
  5. James Hoban, who also restored it after it
  6. was burned by the British 1814; it was then
  7. painted white to hide the scars. The interior
  8. was completely rebuilt 1948-52. The
  9. president's study is known from its shape as
  10. the Oval Office. The name White House, first
  11. recorded in 1811, is often adapted to refer
  12. to other residences of the president, for
  13. example Little White House, at Warm Springs,
  14. Georgia, where F D Roosevelt died; Western
  15. White House, at San Clemente, California,
  16. where Nixon had a home.
